Musical and sartorial musings by Balagan

I dig for beats and clothes. I grabbed my dad’s old Levi’s cords and knock-off Polo shirts from the top of his closet when I was in high school, and–miracle of miracles–most of it still fits. I also snagged a way lot of music from my parents, which was easier to do from both Mom and Dad because I don’t cross-dress. All this is good background for tonight’s music extravaganza and tomorrow (Saturday Nov. 14) Brown Bag Supersale here at Diece.

FUNNY ACCENT In Store Now

You can feel like I did in my dad’s closet, thankful that your forebears hung on to those “weird” clothes that you have to be a bit older to realize were actually always dope. Come rummage and get your fill of vintage for cheap-o prices. Oh and buy a copy of Funny Accent, my international mix CD! Peace and chicken grease, Balagan.

Peaches, di[e]ce Party,Dan Aurbach …just another bmore weekend

November is a lovely month! The beginning of another Baltimore winter and the Holiday season are now upon us. Many of my favorite people were born this month, including myself. The only way to honor all these Scorps and Sag’s is to party continuously. Don’t fret! I’m going to let you know exactly what you should be doing.

TAXLO PARTY!!!

TAXLO PARTY!!!

Taxlo presents Peaches with MEN and Ponytail Thurs. Nov. 12th at Sonar.  If you’re not familiar you need to get familiar.  This night should be filled with pelvic thrusts and yet another beer/sweat drenched shirt (shirt provided by di[e]ce).  Don’t let the wet discourage you.  It’s a very good wet and it’s going to be raining out anyway.

Friday night we will begin the fun down at the store by celebrating music and those of us who love it.  We will have a new mix for guests to grab up and some fine new music brought from our good friend VICE.

MIAMIVICE

MIAMIVICE

Sometimes you have to see what the folks in Australia are listening to…or at least what Steve, I mean VICE is listening to.  His ears are nice so I’m sure we are in for some treats.   Balagan will be in the building playing some of his arsenal of tunes.  We will also be making a mix during the party so come ready with suggestions and or your favorite music in hand.  Remember, di[e]ce is always open to hearing what our friends are listening to and what they think others should hear.  This blog is to keep us all soaked in sound so please feel free to contribute and or make suggestions whenevs.  If you haven’t made it  to any of our gatherings be sure to check this one out.  Di[e]ce ‘ing, listening, drinking, dancing …all good things so come on down and do them with us.

Oh …I must’nt forget.  Look out for our interview with Ms. Libby of Lazerbitch.  We spent some quality time with her and will be picking her brain for her thoughts on music, bmore and pretty much whatever we can think to ask.

After our Music Blog Launch party we will be heading over to Sonar again for Dan Auerbach of  The Black Keys.

Music Blog Launch Party is heeerrreeee!!

music blog launch 2

There is this stuff out called music… and it’s sweet.  All of us at di[e]ce listen to it and think that the world should share our same passion for all things music.  We have created a forum for all the misfits to get any info you may need as you begin your journey into the wonderful world of sound.  You will need ears and perhaps feet (see “Dancing Is The Coolest”) to fully enjoy what’s about to happen to you.  Although dance may be involved there may also be some tears, a little attitude, some teenage angst.  There is a song out there for all moods and emotions.  Don’t be intimidated.  It’s all quite fun! Music… out now!!!

To celebrate music, we will be having a small get together (see pics from store opening) at our beloved di[e]ce on Friday November 13th, 2009. The blog is to raise awareness and to also create a community for all music listeners, performers, goers and lovers of all kind.  The blog will feature local artists, artists coming to the Baltimore/DC area, playlists of di[e]ce mixes (ask for one in store), what Jay Lawson, our resident music expert, is listening to and reviews/alerts on new music.

Please feel free to request a copy of ‘ We All Fall Now’ during your next visit to di[e]ce.  I will also be handing out copies the night of Oct.30th…so come find me on these Balti streets or grab one then!

Le Loup Nurse Blitz’ the Ravens

The weekend began with all sorts of good things.  Not only were Ravens tickets put in front of me but then I received the news that a certain monkey will be staying with us here in Baltimore until August. I’m looking forward to spending more time with this unique creature and learning all of it’s ways.  A certain level of celebration was in order and was provided by one of my favorite bands of the moment, ‘Nurses’.  The monkey and I recruited a couple friends and made them aware of our need to celebrate.  They too had apparently received news warranting good times in the form of celebration.

‘Nurses’ is an experimental psych band currently touring their debut release, “Apple’s Acre”.  I have been listening to them for the past couple of months and have been intrigued to say the least.  You may be able to hear some influences amongst the blanket of sound created by these three young men, but, ‘Nurses’ are undeniably doing something new and refreshing.  The band is made up of childhood friends Aaron Chapman and John Bowers who started developing their sound in Iowa Falls, Iowa in  2006.  They had brief stints in both Southern California and then Chicago.  Their path then lead them to a dusty old attic in Portland, Oregon where they would meet their third member, drummer James Mitchell in late 2007.  Up until spring of this year that is where they stayed finishing up “Apple’s Acre” which they are currently touring.

I have heard the album numerous times and thought there was no way they’d be able to capture the same sound live.  They did.  It was really great.  I found myself singing along, clapping and dancing as if I were on stage with them.  Although they were the opener their performance was that of any headliner I’ve seen in a long while. Highly entertaining and dramatic but because of the music and not their outfits, or lighting or even the surrounding crowd.  They performed for the 20 people at Ottobar as if there were 2,000 and I am pleased to say that the lil’ monkey and I were there to enjoy.

le loup

Le Loup's new album 'Family' is out now. You should probably get it

‘Le Loup’ , whose album ‘Family’, was the cause for this event, could be categorized as…hmm… let’s say…freak, tribal, psyche folk for the beach and other whimsical adventures ( I must suggest that this may perhaps be more appropriate for beach nights and or overcast beach days). Certainly worth looking into if you’re not already aware.  Their beginnings are very similar to those of our beloved di[e]ce.  The band is made up not so much of a group of musicians as it is more of a collective of like minded artists and creators from all over the east coast.  Sam Simkoff’s release from his paralegal gig was recording and playing with sounds between his computer a couple bells and whistles along side a banjo.  Using the magic of the  internet and ‘Craigslist’, Sam put together a group of internet peeps forming the band ‘Le Loup’ (The Wolf), and with the continued support from our local scene these local artists should be just  fine (Sam,without the paralegal gig).

Blitzen Trapper was fun and you guys should know that already.  If not, do some research.  It will be fun.  They are fun.  Again, that lil  monkey and I found ourselves at Otto and again found ourselves treating our ears like royalty by pleasing with the …hmm …always rocking  steady while soaring to new heights electro-funk-country soul, Steely Dan’esque …at times, hitz of the Blitz! As I said before, it was fun…duh.

Blitzen Trapper's EP 'Black River Killer and album 'Furr' out now. get if don't got

Very appropriate for those who enjoy a versatile gauntlet of fun on a Saturday night.

The monkey and I left from Blitzen Trapper in a hurry.  The show was great but we both knew what we had in store for us.  We curled up on the couch and giggled about our next event with the same excitement of a couple of spoiled nine year old kids would have the night before Christmas.  Sunday brings Ravens and Ravens bring smiles.  This weekend I was fortunate enough to take my smile to the Ravens.  That smile stayed with me pretty much all day until some weird confusion over winning and losing ball games went down.  It soon returned at the Purple Patio.  By the end of the day all was well in the life of Jay.  I’m happy to have a fairly well behaved adventurous little monkey.  I’m happy and pleased to be in a city where our music scene and the fine folks who enjoy it with me provide such a versatile and colorful array of experiences.  Last but not least it is always great to see all my good ol’ friends at the ball game.  However I like you all a little bit more after a win …and we all win when you come visit di[e]ce!

So until next time… I’ll leave you with this…  RAVENS!

laters.
